Buying books from a store run like this is talking about something you love with Eliza.
@mrled
Other products on Amazon are like this too but with books it seems more fucked up. Like I expect for Best Buy to ship me a box full of trashvertisements with my $40 HDMI cable but it seems wrong my to do that with something important.
@mrled
Half the time I want to know what a book is about on Amazon, I start scrolling down and give up before I manage to find the about section past the 6 (yes) buy options, popular highlights, something book clubs, about the author, other books, more other books, and metadata
@mrled
I don't understand this. Are people really more interested in popular highlights than a description of the book? I can't imagine ever wanting to see that. But ig the Excel spreadsheet that runs amazon dot com sees more milliseconds in app this way so

I knew someone like 8 years ago who used a cellular iPad for this functionality. Would be kind of cool if the device that fits in your pocket could do it!
@mrled
Although really the purest form of this is just not accepting phone calls or voice mails at all. I don't understand why that isn't an option in software at least.
@mrled
Hypothetical: what if phones didn't accept audio messages and didn't notify you of missed calls? No indication that someone tried to call you. Voice for ephemeral communication, text if you want it to be visible later.

@thecodinghatter The first thought I had was "this would never be a problem on Linux".
@thecodinghatter
@mrled You know I've never had a problem on Windows or WSL2... 🧌😁
@mrled
Tried an OS update and reboot, no dice. Ultimate fix was `xcode-select -switch /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools`.
@mrled
@joshisledbetter I would have more sympathy for broken Xcode if it stayed localized to Xcode. (I've shipped broken code before, there but by the grace etc.) I am not using Xcode! I want to run git, which is not an Apple product, from my Bash prompt!!!!
@joshsojoshsoj
@mrled I’ve only worked on one iOS app and it was the worst part of my career. Xcode is hell.
@mrled
Should I fix this problem or just run git in docker until I am forced to reboot????????????????? probably the second one ig
@mrled
I have updated Xcode tools about 10 times today btw
@mrled
I love that git is part of Xcode and breaks every time there's an update. For git to work normally all the time would be bad actually. I have plenty of time to deal with this and nothing better to do. https://t.co/XQ8DAIDldM

Something I've never understood about user_data/cloud-init for various cloud platforms: in that world, do we just not care about user-level security boundaries inside the OS? No way to provide secrets (access tokens, private keys) restricted to one user (eg root) in the instance.
@mrled
If I were Github, I'd add a one-click integration that turns a tarball of binaries into .deb, .rpm, and Alpine .apk packages, and then serves them out of a new package repository, handling signing keys transparently.
@mrled
When should I be writing a custom script to parse the Github API, download the correct binary, extract it, and copy it to the right location, and when should I be building, testing, and hosting custom packages for the binaries I use? I don't have a good heuristic for this.

This is what’s so aggravating about the payments industry. Everyone is like “Venmo works great, why would you ever want anything more awesome than that experience.” No: none of this is awesome.
@matthew_d_green
Tried to use Venmo recently and it insisted I “reconnect” my bank account using a service called Plaid: this apparently lets Plaid see all my bank statements. Seriously, why the heck is that necessary?
