@ChristianSelig This reminds me that this can be a contentious issue elsewhere in software too, e.g. MongoDB's SSPL controversy, different from Amplosion but the desire to be "open source" is the same.
@ChristianSelig
@mrled Fair opinion, Iām looking for honesty! Iād call that Redistributable Software, or Free Source.
@mrled
@ChristianSelig I answered no on the poll. What would you call code that can be copied and republished freely? It is nice to have a moniker for code like this. Fwiw i have no moral stance on whether code is open or not and i bought and love Amplosion.

(4/6) I don't want to be a dick. I published it so people can learn, audit, or even compile it onto their own device (without paying me). I just don't want people to redistribute it, because I think making a living from software is fair.
@ChristianSelig
(5/6) I'm also not deceitful, on the front of the repo on GitHub it clearly asks you not to redistribute it. It's not a secret "gotcha!" hidden in the fine print.
I just don't want people like this: https://t.co/NLzG2xlPey
@ChristianSelig
(6/6) I also think I'm a reasonable person who listens, so if I'm wrong here I'm happy to hear it and correct. Polls are anonymous, happy to hear thoughts too.
Is Amplosion open source?
@ChristianSelig
(2/6) I personally don't agree, I think to the average person (myself included), "open source" is a common term that means the code is openly available on a site like GitHub. I don't think that entitles you to take it for your own and resell it or something.
@ChristianSelig
(3/6) I understand for a lot of people "open source" means a Richard Stallman definition of software should be free, but I think language evolves, and I think in modern day "open source" is a fair characterization of code that is on GitHub for all to see and peruse.
@ChristianSelig
(1/6) Relevant time to ask I suppose. Iāve received a few emails annoyed I call Amplosion āopen sourceā (even though it's on GitHub). Since I ask people not to redistribute/resell it as their own, they claim it's not "open source" and I'm lying. https://t.co/CoUfz4dYTq

There is basically nothing I can reasonably do in bash from first principles. Is a file empty? Better Google it.
@tqbf
Iāve written like 1500 lines of bash in the last two weeks and my entire experience of bash is just Googling how to do anything and never retaining anything. I wonder if this is what Java felt like in the 2000s.
