This rant thread makes me wonder who is BEST at counteracting link rot for their own technical documentation.

@mrled
I think The Open Group does a pretty great job with the POSIX docs. https://t.co/iLALrPagBn
@mrled
Those docs are easy for me to find because I always get at them from the excellent https://t.co/NZ9MOkwRNR ... the site that makes me enjoy shell programming.
@mrled
I was going to say "the talk is great too!" and link to https://t.co/SBRi9O14hr but, of course, the original URL of the talk is now a 404 :(
@mrled
But fortunately it is on YouTube! https://t.co/VoqrsIDf1m
If you write shell (or ever have to read it, lol) this talk is a really great resource.
@mrled
... and when you go there today you are redirected (see‽ it's possible!) to a URL ending in "?view=azurermps-6.13.0&viewFallbackFrom=azurermps-5.0.0".
@mrled
The docs for 5.0.0 are not still online, but the docs for 5.7.0 are. Kind of weird that it doesn't take you there instead of to the docs for 6.13.0, but I'll take it.
@mrled
In fairness, I should note that the documentation for the AzureRM.KeyVault module that is also linked from the same answer is still good. They have a cool versioning system too, where my original link ended with "?view=azurermps-5.0.0"...
@mrled
But the document still exists. And, as a nice improvement, the URL is much better today*. That's great!
* If you're coming upon this tweet a week or more from now, believe me, there was content at the URL in this tweet at the time I tweeted it.

@mrled
Would an HTTP 301 redirect have been so hard?
(I'd link you to your own docs on these redirects, @Microsoft, but I figure by the time you read it the location may have changed.)
@mrled
Nearly everything Microsoft has ever published changes its URL every year or three. A constant thorn under my fingernails.
@mrled
Why can't @Microsoft keep technical documentation links from rotting?
Four years is not *that* long, even online, yet the "Strongly Encouraged Development Guidelines" I linked to in this answer is totally gone

Whattttttt. I loved Control and I never noticed these, which align with my interests https://t.co/pnKs9Q3nyI https://t.co/nA5OtUCCVB
@qrs
@whitequark Why doesn't Control let the player toggle in programs on the PDP-8 minicomputers? https://t.co/5TvErTCtpH
@whitequark
unrestrained gas cylinders i'm telling you!! they aren't appropriately labeled either. and where's the proof mark. why are you like this https://t.co/xIrGgVSnF4
@mrled
Oh shit this is so cool. Really useful way to teach phonetics. (I miss linguistics a lot.) https://t.co/j7ryXsm641
@whitequark
you gotta restrain your cylinder. for safety
@whitequark
this game has -way- too many improperly restrained gas cylinders around

(I had hoped my wrists wouldn’t notice a little 90 minute exercise, and maybe I could sneak short stints in the cafe back into my regular life, but it looks like that still isn’t a great idea ☹️)
@mrled
But today, it’s such a huge contrast to my Ergodox. I can type for 8+ hours on that thing with only a little occasional soreness.
@mrled
I really wish there was a laptop that used a layout like the Ergodox, although given that tables are rarely at an ergonomic height and a laptop keyboard wouldn’t keep my hands shoulder-width apart, it might not help that much.
@mrled
At the very least it would be nice to use the same keymap :)
@mrled
(What was I doing on the QWERTY keyboard today? Working on something on my laptop in a cafe. I really miss doing that, but I haven’t been able to since before covid, because of wrist pain. I think it has probably been about 21 months since I did that, come to think.)
@mrled
Goddamn. I just typed about 3300 words on a regular QWERTY keyboard, the most in over a year at this point. Right hand is cramping bad now.
@mrled
I think part of this must be some way I’ve learned to hold my shoulder or arm, and/or move my hand. Certainly I’ve been able to do much more than this before without pain.
@SketchesbyBoze
what's one book you adore that, if you learn someone else loves it, makes them your friend for life?
(anyone who loves Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is automatically a kindred spirit.)
@mrled
What's the collective human potential wasted on understanding how to manage disk arrays with MegaCli64? What percentage of GDP do we spend working with this tool?
@mrled
@_joshuafonseca @ErgoDoxEZ I’d like that very much. I made a site for mine if you wanna see: https://t.co/8NjQvmCgsd
@mrled
@_joshuafonseca @ErgoDoxEZ Very cool! That’s my experience too - was hesitant about getting one but it has basically eliminated pinky pain for me. Do you share your layout anywhere?
@readingtheend
what's your evil job? like if you were Evil You, what unethical job would you excel at?

@mrled
OF COURSE politics. Would be cool if you had a slider for how incendiary to allow, but I’m skeptical the result would be very good (then again I’ve never worked on ML on any of these teams, prove me wrong pls)
@mrled
Photos / videos of kids are similar.
Oooh you know what would be better is if you could do this differently per follow, like wanting to see pics of kids in the family and friends’ pets, but not anyone else’s
@mrled
My spiciest wish (which I placed in the middle of this thread on purpose) is pictures of animals being cute. I think there is no more banal boring content in all of online and the thing is I know this is an annoying opinion!!! If I could mute it quietly I would
@mrled
Come to think of it keyword mutes aren’t a thing on fb anyway right? I can’t check I have archived my account
@mrled
People taking about blocking someone or being blocked (hmm actually I could probably just keyword mute this, a bad example, brb)
@mrled
Specific memes, like how great would it be if even a new image macro drops you could mute it after the first day, I can barely imagine the bliss 😌
@mrled
Or textual joke formats. Sometimes this is doable with a keyword mute, but frequently there’s collateral damage to unrelated tweets
@mrled
Thread of things that I wish there was a ML algo muting for me (mostly not feasible with keyword mutes, but theoretically possible with ML on the backend (Twitter/FB-side) or on the end-user’s device (Apple style)

@mubix Not sure if this counts as “general usage”, but having arrow keys available by pressing a modifier + WASD or IJKL is fantastically useful. Requires a weird keyboard tho. https://t.co/02Z2t31HLN

What's one software/hardware general usage trick that you use nearly every day that you don't think many others use? Mine is the Quake-like "Hotkey Window" built into iTerm2. Not having to figure out which desktop that terminal window is on is life changing. What's yours?
