@_StevenFan All that’s just design though - this thing hasn’t actually worked yet :) and the software stuff is all just in my head at the moment. It’s been slow going lately as other priorities have popped up, but I hope to be able to focus on it soon

@mrled

@_StevenFan With lizardfs you can do complicated stuff like have different redundancy and parity for files in different directories too.

@mrled

@_StevenFan Yes! I want it to be as fault tolerant as possible - right now the design is missing fault tolerance only on the network boot system (which could be addressed easily) and the conserver system which lets you connect to each node over serial (maybe not possible to make redundant)

@mrled

@_StevenFan (Also, can’t stop thinking about possible later versions of this cluster. If I used more expensive macchiatobin SBCs, I could get 10Gbe, which might be fast enough to actually work on live from Lightroom/photoshop. But that’s getting way ahead of myself.)

@mrled

@_StevenFan Ultimately what I’m personally gonna store on this cluster is probably like Plex media and large backups, but it’s also about the experiment, how manageable I can make something very sysadmin-focused like lizardfs

@_StevenFan

@mrled Im thinking of getting into film so this could be relevant

@mrled

@_StevenFan I also can’t get out of my head this idea for a home cluster system that is redundant so you can run services from home for privacy reasons, and manage hardware failures while the services are still up. Might need to be a totally different experiment tho, we’ll see

@_StevenFan

@mrled Is there RAID like fault tolerance of individual components? I really want a high level overview! But don't feel pressured to make one r.n. if it takes you away

@mrled

@_StevenFan My dad is a photographer and is constantly managing his storage, expensive new units, managing arrays that ran out of space, that kind of thing. What would be amazing is a pool that can take any disk, of any size, and is fast

@mrled

@_StevenFan Well, I started this as an experiment, thinking that if it worked super well it might be a good way for people with lots of data storage needs to add semi fast storage to a pool that can grow indefinitely

@_StevenFan

@mrled NAS? Cool! What are you storing if u don't mind me asking? This is pretty cool.

@mrled

@_StevenFan Right now all my time is going into getting components laid out and connected up, which has involved learning a bunch of new things as I’d never used tools like a dremel before

@mrled

@_StevenFan Yeah, I guess I never actually laid out the end goal here. Gonna be a lizardfs cluster made of odroid HC2 nodes. The idea is that it’ll be easy to add/upgrade storage by just adding/replacing a node.

@_StevenFan

@mrled What is this going to be? Collect all these threads into a higher order thread?

@_StevenFan

Think it would be cool to record practice journals, discussions, and informal talks about meditation and practice to create an embodied social fabric of practitioners

I made a bad game in 2015 and this was the umm. Win condition. https://t.co/r8pNp151Z5

@mrled

PLEASE DONT zoom in and CSI enhance your way into figuring out what books those are and then make fun of me for them!!! Thanks

But what if he has two keyboards? 😈 https://t.co/aIF6BWteQh https://t.co/iPuF9JEROy

@mrled

@boldport That looks great :)

@boldport

@mrled I recently made a simple website for myself at https://t.co/76yFkdYvMm and in spirit it's similar to yours. I also like getting emails! :)

@mrled

@boldport Thanks... I’ve mostly always been a lurker, making more connections is a goal for me in 2020

@boldport

Very pleasant personal webpage by @mrled, particularly the email invitation. https://t.co/LxLc8W87JM https://t.co/meRviQUsbf

Also, the damned lamp cord doesn’t mark one side or the other, so I have to keep double checking to make sure I’m wiring negative to negative and positive to positive.

@mrled

Also wired power from screw terminal to the router. Not sure I made the right choices here either - the lamp wire I got has very thick shielding and is kinda bulky, and there isn’t much room to maneuver when attaching to the screw terms. https://t.co/F9roo3VHNW

@mrled

Did some initial playing around with power, discovered I failed to order ground wire and only have red/black +/- wire for AC in. Also, I don’t know how to wire this switch! Need to do more research. https://t.co/AXbY5ziJIg

@mrled

A few stock @ErgoDoxEZ caps, neatly arranged https://t.co/XG3ifJDFnq

@mrled

My Launch Pad from @spacecat_design looks much nicer with some matching keycaps instead of old scavenged ones from a broken “gamer” keyboard tho https://t.co/ksMgRcR1Si

@mrled

More playing around. These all don’t exactly match, still fun to get some colors on here. https://t.co/XIC6b3ZAkW

RT @SwiftOnSecurity: Commuting to work is a second job where you drive an empty Uber.

@mrled

Hmm, should probably fix the orientation of the 3 photos from earlier. That’s better. https://t.co/ksKLEwAykh

@mrled

Close up video - there really are a lot of them https://t.co/1xJn5MDazL

@mrled

Some of them did find their way only my Ergodox, however. Most of the ones I got don’t match the profile of the keys I already have, so there wasn’t too much room for customization. https://t.co/RwcSZlXZVU

@mrled

Got a grab bag of keycaps in from https://t.co/cwHLOObofr - mostly for macro pads. https://t.co/1F3bvco7Jh

Why does the t[.]co p̶r̶i̶v̶a̶c̶y̶ ̶v̶i̶o̶l̶a̶t̶o̶r̶ “link shortener” will occasionally stutter? Especially when using links outside of twitter, I frequently see it just sit for several secs before it redirects to wherever I actually wanted to go in the first place

@mrled

@ZackShapiro @jillruthcarlson Not a flat fee AFAIK but this is what @latacora does

@ZackShapiro

Does a service exist for early stage founders where you can pay a flat fee and someone comes in and, over a few weeks, handles all the basic security stuff (2FA, encrypting certain database fields, general security education)?

@mrled

@MachinePix @openlabbott This is amazing. Found technical details for anyone interested: https://t.co/YHbEXQskuF

@mrled

Next step is wiring power, which is going to involve a lot of soldering and testing one by one. After that, Ethernet/power/serial cable installation and routing, and then finally software. (Oh god, right, there is still a lot of software work to do.)

@mrled

I’ve attached all the components!! Currently that means only 4 cluster nodes with empty slots for 2 more. This is SO exciting, it looks how I planned it and everything is solid... even with some mistakes, the plan worked!! 💎 https://t.co/RG1uaEK44J

@mrled

Also attached the switch and router today, which means...

@mrled

With the 1/2” screws I can easily loosen the cluster nodes without having to completely unscrew them from the back board https://t.co/w2sYVoB2yn

@mrled

(You might notice the damned screws are FLATHEAD. These were 1/2” 6-32 screws I already had, but being flathead they’re obviously garbage. The screws I ordered today are 1/2” 6-32 Phillips and as I un/re-mount units for testing, I’ll replace their screws.)

@mrled

Today I worked on installing the actual cluster nodes, and it worked out as well as I hoped! When they’re installed this way it’s easy to screw them down and they are quite solid, not gonna move. https://t.co/EJjzraOWmt

@mrled

That brings us to the end of the day yesterday. Well, actually, just to the afternoon - had an overnight trip planned and we got back about an hour and a half ago.

@mrled

Making so much progress!! These two were taken about a half hour apart yesterday. Installing the components is so satisfying, I can finally see it coming together ✨✨✨✨ https://t.co/u5QxUaNkqK

@mrled

A shot to show that there is plenty of room inside the plastic housing for nuts to keep the 6-32 screws in place on the USB hub https://t.co/FPZl7srKPP

@mrled

I’ve ordered some #8 washers that should solve this problem, but for now the only issue is that it looks ugly. Also ordered a bunch of 1/2” 6-32 screws so I’ll have ones that are long enough.

@mrled

Also attached some black angle brackets to the USB hub so it fits on its side. Again, dremel, this time with the drill bit. You might notice the silver brackets - this was the screw head problem again, and the #6 washers I have were even too small, so I improvised. https://t.co/xAnTBt9xkO
